At NOCO Humane, our Foster Care Volunteers play a vital role in giving animals the care, comfort, and patience they need before finding their forever homes. One dedicated foster, Susan, shares her experience and the lessons she’s learned along the way.
Why Foster…
“I wanted to foster dogs to help them through what can be a stressful time waiting to find their Forever Home,” she explains. “I have a lot of love to give these great furry creatures, and they give so much unconditional love back. NOCO Humane does so much to find all their critters new, safe homes.”
Her First Foster: A Lesson in Love
Her first foster dog, Valiant, was a one-of-a-kind pit bull who quickly stole her heart. “He slept on a big fluffy pillow next to my bed every night—he just wanted to be loved and close to me. At first, I was hesitant to take in such a big dog, but I decided everybody deserves a chance, and I fell in love with him.” Though she wished she could have kept him, her two West Highland Terriers, Mr. Quigley and Fergus, had already filled up her car.
Helping a Dog Heal
Another unforgettable foster was Max, a dog recovering from hip surgery after being hit by a car. “At first, I thought he was baring his teeth at me, but it turns out he just had the biggest grin on his face,” she recalls. Despite his recovery restrictions, Max was eager to make friends with her Westies, sniffing noses and wagging tails through the gate. “If he had stayed longer, I think they would have become best friends.”
The Challenges and Rewards of Fostering
Fostering comes with its challenges—many animals have unknown pasts and need time to trust. But watching a dog blossom into a loving companion makes it all worth it. “Fostering has taught me that even a little help, love, and comfort can go a long way,” she says. “It’s a big commitment, but the benefits far outweigh any inconvenience.”
Encouragement for Future Fosters
For those considering fostering, she emphasizes the support available. “NOCO Humane provides great training, ongoing support, and the tools you need to be successful and confident.” Her three words to describe fostering? Rewarding. Satisfying. Fulfilling.
