On Tuesday, April 18, Larimer Humane Society was instrumental in a rescue effort involving a hoarding situation in Weld County. Our staff worked with the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s PACFA program to assist with gathering and transporting nearly 100 dogs to local animal welfare organizations – 35 of which were transported to our shelter. This is in addition to 22 dogs that were surrendered to Larimer Humane Society from the same home in mid March.

Given the extent of the hoarding situation, it’s no surprise that these dogs are under socialized, confused and scared. Our staff has been working diligently to assess their medical conditions, evaluate their behavioral needs, and ensure their comfort.

Between the two surrender cases, 57 dogs from this home have found safety and shelter at Larimer Humane Society in just four weeks’ time. While our shelter was already experiencing an influx of dogs, these animals needed our support. As northern Colorado’s most comprehensive provider of animal welfare services, we were happy to step in and work to heal, nurture, and protect these at-risk pets.

The owners cooperated with the agencies and agreed to surrender the dogs. All dogs relinquished were small chiweenie/terrier mix dogs. This case is currently under investigation by the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, and we are unable to release additional information at this time.
