May 20th is National Rescue Dog Day, recognizing the benefits of bringing a four-legged companion into your home and the joy of giving them the forever family they deserve.
Larimer Humane Society adopts out nearly 1,000 dogs each year to loving families. Just as important, we also care for and return 1,100 dogs back to their owners when they become separated – that’s twice the national return-to-owner rate for dogs!
No matter their size, color, or breed, dogs will find a way to nuzzle, fetch, or beg their way into your heart. You’ll find it hard not to scratch one behind the ear. Rescue dogs often overcome extreme obstacles and yet provide comfort, security, and friendship as family members.
But, rescue dogs are capable of much more. With training, they contribute to the independence of people with disabilities, and provide emotional support to individuals who are struggling. In these circumstances, they become our eyes, ears, or legs as well as our best friend. If you aren’t ready to adopt, there are other opportunities for you to make a difference this month:
- Adopt! We have numerous amazing dogs waiting for their forever family. To see the full list of dogs currently available for adoption at Larimer Humane Society, click here.
- Fostering is an excellent way to commemorate the occasion because many homeless pups just need a break from the shelter environment, extra medical care, or a chance to practice their socialization.
- Donations are always needed, especially as COVID-19 has forced shelters to make do with limited numbers of volunteers and staffing. You can donate to Larimer Humane Society here.
In the meantime, we can celebrate our rescued dogs on social media, which is an excellent way to champion your shelter pet and spread the word about animal rescue.
